SOLO TRAVEL, what you need to know
In 2021, travelling has been fundamentally changed. More than ever, us humans
want new experiences, adventures and a major respite from our comfort zones.
International trends suggest that there is a growing appetite for women over the age
of 50 to travel solo. There is an urge for people to connect, meet and bond with local people while on holiday. Now that travel is slowly recovering, it’s a great time to book now and travel in the future.
Important tips to remember when travelling alone:
1. Don’t arrive at night (if you can help it)
There’s nothing more disorienting than arriving in a foreign country at night. Especially if you need to find your own transport and accommodation. Try schedule your arrival time for during the day, this way, if you’re not happy with where you’re staying, you can make a plan to change hotels and feel more in control.
2. Listen to your ‘gut’
If you get that unsettled, nervous feeling, don’t discard it, trust it. Make sure your radar is on high alert and if you get a suspicious feeling about a person, place or situation – change strategy and direction quickly!
3. Make sure everyone knows where you are
A clever tip is to keep your hotel’s business card on you at all times, just in case you need to ask a local about how to get back to your hotel. Also always inform the hotel or a friend where you are going that day just to make sure they are informed on your whereabouts.
4. Make friends with locals but don’t tell them everything
As much as we want to believe that everyone has our best interests at heart, be careful of being conned. This could happen at a local bar, nightclub or simply at a restaurant. Just be wary what you tell anyone and keep your intuition ‘on’.
5. Educate yourself on the country
Every country has their own set of pros and cons. It could be pick pocketing in London or a bicycle theft in Amsterdam. Just make sure you are fully up to speed when it comes to what the pretty crimes are of that town/ city and how you can navigate around them, in a sensible manner while still enjoying your holiday fully.
